Last-Minute Flight

2–3 minutes

When thinking of vacation, most folks set aside time in advance as well as a location to spend that time. How often do you see folks set aside time but not a place? That is exactly the predicament I found myself in recently. Five days off and a holiday weekend granted me a total of nine days off from work. Many days but few (no) plans. That’s a new one for me since I am a meticulous planner. This new experience involved many new experiences all of which will be posted separately. Be on the look out!

It was a Tuesday morning when I thought to myself, “self, it’s time to head out on a trip to anywhere.” And that’s just what I ended up doing. No, I wasn’t on the midnight train going anywhere from south Detroit, however, I did end up on a train eventually. Read about that HERE.

Typically a sane person would hop in the car and take a well thought out road trip somewhere. You know, it’s fairly cheap compared to flying, there are roadside attractions, and, if you’re lucky, a Buc-ee’s. Not me. I made the jump into hypothetical hyperspace and ended up on the internet researching literally anywhere I could go that was new. A few clicks later, I was packing my bags and getting ready for a same-day, one-way flight to Seattle.

That’s a new experience for me. I have never personally booked a same-day flight across the country just because I could. The theme of this last-minute flight/vacation was “God’s will be done.” I had a one-way ticket to Seattle and was booking things as I went along. If a place or transportation experience didn’t work out, it’s because God didn’t need me there. For that, I am thankful. See, if I had booked the flight to Los Angeles to take a different train from what I mentioned earlier, I could have been in a serious train derailment.

When I booked my last-minute trip, I went onto Priceline to see what they had going on. It turned out they had some type of express deal for anyone who had sign-in credentials. The caveat to that was I could not choose the airline I would be flying on. No worries! I was on a mission to get to Seattle as soon as possible. After finding a random discount code online, I got a few dollars off my fare and had a flight for 5:45pm. The timer was set.

Once I arrived at the airport, I did all the normal procedures and was finally on my Alaska Airlines flight to Seattle. The same day. Boy did that feel weird.

The thrill of booking a flight last-minute and embarking on an unforgettable journey will be in my memories for many years. Was it worth the money, hassle, and potential stress? For me, everything was worth it. Would I do it again? I could never say no because, well, I ended up doing it again. . . More on that another time.

Signing off from Seattle, WA.
