On occasion I have participated in conversations regarding the awkwardness of doing certain activities alone. Maybe it’s seeing a movie or eating at a restaurant. Sure, these things are fun with close friends, but sometimes it’s okay to go solo. I’ve been to the movies alone because, well, I’m there to see the movie. I’m not there to talk to people during the movie. That’s rude!
I just had the most glorious meal at Cracker Barrel. None of my friends had last-minute availability to join me and I was hungry. Some people would be sad and then eat a sad bowl of cereal at home. Not me! My next move was to hop in the car and get to the closest Cracker Barrel to break my fast.
Upon arrival, I walked straight to the podium with an expectation of a short wait. Expectation met. The lady grabbed a menu and silverware and immediately walked me into the seating area. I already knew what I wanted to eat, so I didn’t even need the menu. The server arrived to take my usual drink order: black coffee and a glass of water. Feeling a little crazy this time, I went ahead and ordered some orange juice also. Drinks were placed on the table and I proceeded to order what I had visited for.
Country Boy Breakfast
- Eggs – scrambled
- Steak – medium-rare
- Two pancakes
- Loaded hashbrowns
Not only did I get seated and place my order in a timely manner, but I also received my food just as timely! Maybe it’s because a table of one is easier to get in and out versus a table of eight. Either way, I was pleasantly surprised.
Did you know that your order (I’m not sure if it’s all orders) comes with biscuits and gravy? I never knew that! Out came some biscuits and gravy along with a selection of jellies I never asked for. Service was top notch this day. My food was devoured almost as quickly as it was ordered and I walked out of there (maybe potentially rolled out of there) satisfied. Thanks, Cracker Barrel people!
Was going to Cracker Barrel solo the best move? I would argue yes. It was a little weird at first, but I went for it and even chatted with the server more than I would have in a group. Maybe that’s why the old guys are always eating by themselves. They get to eat in peace and participate in good conversation. Sharing a meal with friends is always a great time. Speed of service (and potentially quality) may be sacrificed with more people, but that isn’t a reason to skip out on sharing a meal with others. However, I would definitely go on a solo trip to Cracker Barrel again.
